Taiwan Unveils First Level 3 Autonomous Electric Bus

Taiwan has launched its first Level 3 self-driving electric bus, a milestone in the nation’s push toward smart mobility. Developed by the Automotive Research & Testing Center (ARTC) with local tech partners, the bus features AI-powered systems for autonomous driving, obstacle avoidance, driver monitoring, and emergency response.

Built on Master Transportation’s EV platform, the vehicle meets UN Regulation No. 157 for Level 3 autonomy, allowing hands-free driving under specific conditions while requiring driver readiness.

ARTC’s smart cabin tech uses deep learning, bio-radar, and sensor fusion to monitor driver alertness and detect emergencies. If danger is detected, the bus can safely pull over and alert authorities.

The launch marks Taiwan’s transition from R&D to real-world deployment of autonomous transport. ARTC expects Level 3 vehicles to gain traction globally by 2030.
