Taipower’s Taichung hydropower units gain international certification

Taipower’s hydropower units on the Dajia River have received certification from the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance and the Low Impact Hydropower Institute, becoming Taiwan’s first to qualify for renewable energy certificates.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs expanded renewable energy rules in 2024 to include water storage and dam projects, allowing reservoir-based hydropower—previously excluded over environmental concerns—to be sold as green electricity. The move supports rising corporate demand and participation in the RE100 program.

Taipower said hydropower costs about US$0.083 per kWh, significantly lower than the typical green electricity rate of about US$0.17–0.20 per kWh for corporate buyers.

The certified system spans five generating units from Techi Reservoir to Maan Dam, with a combined downstream capacity of 133,500 kW and annual output exceeding 400 million kWh. The facility also integrates solar panels and includes ecological measures such as fish migration equipment and AI-based monitoring.
