Taiwan Bicycle Industry Advances Labor Reforms

Taiwan’s bicycle industry is accelerating efforts to improve labor practices for migrant workers, according to a new report that examines progress since concerns about recruitment conditions were first raised more than a year ago.

The report found that at least 10 bicycle and component manufacturers have adopted or begun implementing no-fee recruitment policies, aiming to eliminate worker-paid recruitment fees. Companies including Tektro Technology Corporation, SRAM Corporation, Joy Industrial Co., Ltd., and Glory Wheel Enterprise Co., Ltd. have introduced such policies, while several others plan to follow suit.

Industry groups including the Taiwan Bicycle Association and the Bicycling Alliance for Sustainability have expanded efforts on supply-chain due diligence, transparency, and worker protections. The association said participating companies account for about 85% of member production capacity.

While significant progress has been made, the report noted that much of the change remains at the policy stage. Industry stakeholders say continued implementation, monitoring, and worker verification will be key to ensuring reforms translate into lasting improvements across the supply chain.
