Tatung University Rolls Out AI to Detect Illegal Dumping

Tatung University has launched an AI system that detects illegal trash dumping with 88% accuracy, reducing the need for manual video monitoring. Under Taiwan’s Waste Disposal Act, dumping in public bins carries fines of $36 to $180.

The AI logs violations with timestamps and video links, streamlining enforcement. Since its January pilot, it has identified trash bags, boxes, and license plates, with accuracy expected to reach 95% this month.

Professor Hsieh Chen-chiung said the system can also be adapted for industrial checks, traffic accidents, and crime alerts, enabling faster response.
