The Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) announced that wind speed data from Triton, Taiwan’s first domestically-built weather satellite, is now improving heavy rainfall forecasts. Launched in October, Triton was developed with over half its locally manufactured components.
Triton collects around 30,000 to 40,000 observation data sets daily, generating 7,000 to 8,000 wind speed data sets. The data, available since May 31, supports the Taiwan Analysis Center for COSMIC (TACC) in enhancing weather predictions. Preliminary research shows Triton’s data fills gaps in radar observation, aiding severe weather forecasting in Taiwan. TASA plans to launch more satellites annually to expand GNSS-R and GNSS-RO capabilities.
