Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to quadruple the country’s electricity generation from renewable sources to 90 billion kWh by 2030.
This comes as many local enterprises are setting carbon neutrality goals.
Renewable energy, largely from solar and wind, increased over 80% to 23.8 billion kWh in 2021 from 12.7 billion kWh in 2016.
This announcement followed a statement by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) that they would not achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 due to insufficient renewable energy supply.
TSMC Chairman, Mark Liu, has urged the government to ramp up renewable energy initiatives.
The Bureau of Energy stated that the government has liberalized the green electricity market and all companies have access to renewable energy from private power providers.
