Taiwan’s Organic Farming Success Sets Global Example

Taiwan has emerged as a leader in organic farming, overcoming the challenges of its subtropical climate to establish the highest proportion of organic farmland in Northeast Asia. With expertise ranging from pest-resistant crop breeding to eco-friendly agricultural products, Taiwan’s experience is being shared with other subtropical countries.

The Organic Agricultural Research Center (OARC) in Hualien, East Asia’s first organic farming research institution, is key to its success. The center has developed innovative solutions to support sustainable farming practices, including high-temperature-tolerant crops and natural pest control products.

Government initiatives have played a vital role, increasing organic farmland to 17,365 hectares through incentives, research, and machinery innovations. Notable efforts include Luoshan Organic Village, Taiwan’s first organic farming community, and eco-farming projects promoting biodiversity and traditional practices in indigenous regions.
